It was a strange year, but still I’ve seen a lot of films and plenty of good ones. I think the end of the list is a little weaker than last year’s, but I decided it was better to keep the number and anyway I like every film and they are worth seeing. As usual the criteria is films seen for the first time through this year that get their first public screening in the past three years. The positions don’t matter much, I certainly like 32nd more than 52nd but I’m not sure if I like it better than the 34th, so they are more organized by zones than positions.

First this year’s shorts: my favorite one was Joshua R. Troxler’s If You Could Go Back, I Would See Her. A fascinating investigation on digital images through some essential elements. Another ten shorts that I loved: Corman’s Eyedrops Got Me Too Crazy (Ivan Cardoso), La France Contre les Robots (Jean-Marie Straub), Garden City Beautiful (Ben Balcom), Now, at Last (Ben Rivers), On an Island (José Luis Guerin), Personal Growth (Maximilian Le Cain, Vicky Langan), República (Grace Passô), Sebastian and Jonas Leaving the Party (Ken Jacobs), A Story From Africa (Billy Woodberry), The White Death of the Black Wizard (Rodrigo Ribeiro).

Foi um ano muito estranho, mas ainda assim muitos filmes vistos e muita coisa boa. Creio que a parte final da lista é um tanto pior que a do ano passado, mas achei por bem manter o número e são todos filmes que eu gosto e merecem ser vistos.  Como sempre o critério são filmes vistos pela primeira vez este ano exibidos pela primeira vez nos últimos três anos. As posições não importam tanto certamente gosto do 32º mais do 52º mas não tenho certeza de que gosto dele mais que do 34º, então os filmes estão mais organizados por áreas que posições.

Primeiramente os curtas: o meu curta favorito do ano foi If You Could Go Back, I Would See Her. do Joshua R. Troxler uma investigação fascinante sobre imagem digital a partir de alguns elementos essenciais. Outros dez curtas de grande impacto: O Colírio de Corman me Deixou Doido Demais (Ivan Cardoso), De Una Isla (José Luis Guerin), La France Contre les Robots (Jean-Marie Straub), Garden City Beautiful (Ben Balcom), A Morte Branca do Feiticeiro Negro (Rodrigo Ribeiro), Now, At Last (Ben Rivers), Personal Growth (Maximilian Le Cain, Vicky Langan), República (Grace Passô), Sebastian and Jonas Leaving the Party (Ken Jacobs), A Story From Africa (Billy Woodberry).

Last part of the festival coverage with films seen in its last few days plus some final observations.

Chico Rei Among Us (Joyce Prado)
Early on Chico Rei Among Us, one of the interview subjects talk about how hard it is to establish Chico Rei history with official historians because they are obsessed with documented truth. That is something that Brazilian Black history Always marginalized and erased often lacks. Joyce Prado’s documentary uses Chico Rei exactly to deal with this erasure and the many ways Brazilian official history follows a whitewashing process that systematizes this erasure of Black roles in diverse areas like their contributions to mining engineering or the origins of São Paulo neighborhood Liberdade (now known as the Japanese neighborhood but the site of the early Black quilombos). Director Prado moves with great ease between the believe on oral history, strong research and smart editing. It is a film that Works well the places of contact among religion, economy and race throughout the country’s history.

O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis (João Botelho)
Ao longo de quatro décadas João Botelho vem tocado um projeto maneirista com um gosto pelo artifício e gesto teatral que não está muito distante de outros colegas portugueses, as vezes dá mais ou menos certo (o filme que ele fez a partir de Os Maias que passou na Mostra de 2013), as vezes soa só aborrecido (como quando filmou Pessoa em O Filme do Desassossego em 2010). Aqui filma um romance de Saramago sobre Pessoa e seu pseudônimo Ricardo Reis no momento que a Europa mergulha no fascismo e se o material está a mão, o filme vai aos poucos afundando no auto referencial do tique autoral que reforça que Botelho pode sonhar com Oliveira, mas existe como uma cópia pálida e sem vida.

Ana. Sem Titulo (Lucia Murat)
Lucia Murat has been working within variations of this material since her first feature Que Bom Te Ver Viva in 1989. An effort to find a historical perspective for 20th century Latin American left. Among the movies she made in such manner Ana. Sem Título seems to me among the strongest exactly because it moves very well between fiction and documented history so it use art to allow this history to reverberate in the present. It finds very good solutions to tie its investigative work and a desire to take into account both the traumas a legacy of resistance.

Ana. Sem Título (Lucia Murat)
Lucia Murat vem trabalhando com variações deste material desde os tempos de Que Bom Te Ver Viva. Um esforço de encontrar uma perspectiva histórica para a esquerda latino-americana do século XX. Entre os filmes que ela realizou nessa chave este Ana. Sem Título me parece um dos mais fortes justamente porque se move muito bem entre a ficção e documento histórico de forma a fazer a usar arte para permitir esta história ecoar no presente. O filme consegue encontrar boas soluções para casar o seu trabalho investigativo e o desejo de dar conta tanto dos traumas como um legado de resistência.

Second post with commentary on films seen at the São Paulo Film Festival betwen Monday, 26 and Wednesday, 28.

#Eagoraoque (Jean-Claude Bernardet e Rubens Rewald)
If film critic/historian Jean-Claude Bernardet is a co-auteur who dominates all the movies by Young São Paulo filmmakers he colaborate ons ince 2008 Filmefobia, it makes sense that he eventually moved to a co-director chair. Bernardet’s fetishism is the interest and limitation of almost all those movies, filmmakers giving na openingso the critic-performer works, on this #Eagoraoque Bernardet and Rewald start from a dialogue/discourse failure of contemporary Brazil to arrive into yet another exercise-performance from Bernardet. At first one might think it will be some sort of extension of Intervenção, a film made of You Tube videos of extreme right wingers that Rewald co-directed a few years ago, this time focusing on matters relating to thr left and there’s a suggestion of that when the filmmakers throw a few challenges for leftist philosopher/newspaper columnist Vladimir Safatle who “plays” one of the main characters, but #Eagoraoque is little more than a symptom of what it a diagnoses. A halted film that at best reproduces the failures of dialogue at its center and at worst exploits them for some very sterile performative games. The mirror is broken and what is left is everyone’s narcissism.

#Eagoraoque (Jean-Claude Bernardet, Rubens Rewald)
Se Jean-Claude Bernardet é co-autor que domina quase todos os filmes dos jovens realizadores paulistas com quem colaborou desde Filmefobia, faz sentido que eventualmente ele assumisse a co-direção. O fetiche Bernardet é o interesse e limite de quase todos esses filmes, realizadores cedendo a plataforma para que o crítico-performer trabalhe, neste #Eagoraoque Bernardet e Rewald partem da falência dialogo/discurso do Brasil contemporâneo para chegar em outro exercício-performance de Bernardet. A princípio podemos imaginar que se trata de algum tipo de extensão do Intervenção que Rewald co-dirigiu alguns atrás, dessa vez focado as esquerdas e há rascunhos disso quando os realizadores jogam algumas armadilhas para o Vladimir Safatle que “interpreta” um dos personagens centrais, mas #Eagoraoque é pouco mais que um sintoma do que diagnostica. Um filme travado que na melhor das hipóteses só reproduz a própria falência de diálogo que está no seu centro e no pior a explora para mais jogos estéreis de performance. O espelho está quebrado e o que resta é o narcisismo de todas as partes.

This is my first post covering the films from the São Paulo International Film Festival with films seen between Friday, 23 and Sunday, 25.

Days (Tsai Ming-liang)
Since announcing his “retirement” around the time of Stray Dogs, Tsai Ming-liang  free from the needs of pretending to deal with narrative has been concentrating more and more in the physical presence and face of his muse Lee Kang-sheng. Days is in such way a culmination of a decade long increasing austere aesthetic investigation. If how Lee Kang-sheng lives in the world is the motif that dominates Tsai’s cinema for three decades now, the manner if which he captures the tactile physicality of this negotiation is even more radical. When I wrote about the earlier Your Face I mentioned how Tsai’s cinema was getting closer to Abbas Kiarostami and Eduardo Coutinho (filmmakers of existence, of acting as a way of being) and Days only reinforces such an idea Lee’s existence negotiates his presence with the camera all the time. It is curious how the most banal of his everyday moments brings to mind the apocalyptical musicals The Hole and Wayward Clouds almost without trying. The long massage sequence is one of the greatest of Tsai’s career.

Primeiro post com os filmes da Mostra cobrindo os vistos entre sexta, 23 e domingo, 25, alem de dois filmes vistos antes do evento começar.

Casa das Antiguidades (João Paulo Miranda Maria)
Casa das Antiguidades chegou por aqui chancelado por muitos elogios vindos da sua carreira em festivais internacionais, mas a julgar pelas conversas com amigos a recepção nessa estreia brasileira foi bem mais fria. Um filme fantástico com um pé no folclore e outro na assombração sobre a permanência do racismo e exploração na sociedade brasileira como m todo e no sul em particular. As referências são mais próximas as de Apichatpong do que filme de horror apesar da atmosfera constante de paranoia e ameaça. Casa das Antiguidades tem um elemento de força inegável que é a presença do veterano Antônio Pitanga que não fazia um papel central no cinema brasileiro a muito tempo e consegue alguns momentos inegáveis enquanto absorve a sua posição. Como um solo de Pitanga o filme tem seu interesse. A direção de João Paulo Miranda Maria é de um controle sistemático que sufoca Pitanga tanto quanto a sociedade sulista que ele precisa lidar. O filme faz pensar as vezes no cinema do Felipe Bragança, mas meio que vai na direção aposta, se Bragança lida com o mesmo universo de referências internacionais e desejo de carnavalizar a sociedade brasileira, seus filmes tendem a ser extremamente soltos, o filme de Miranda Maria é de um academicismo opressor que termina por eliminar qualquer potência inerente ao materal e a atuação de Pitanga.

With all the attention Brazilian media has given to Pelé’s 80th birthday, it is useful to look back to 1963, when Brazilian cinema dedicated a docudrama for him. O Rei Pelé (The King Pelé) was directed by the great Argentinian filmmaker Carlos Hugo Christensen (who stayed a quarter of century around here), with dialogues by Nelson Rodrigues (Brazil’s most celebrated playwright) e and Pele himself on screen in the adult scenes.

Com toda a atenção dada pela mídia brasileira aos 80 anos de Pelé, é justa apontar que lá atrás em 1963, o cinema brasileiro dedicou-lhe um docudrama no calor do momento. O Rei Pelé foi dirigido pelo ótimo cineasta argentino Carlos Hugo Christensen (que passou um quarto de século por aqui), com diálogos do Nelson Rodrigues (o argumento é do Benedito Ruy Barbosa) e o próprio Pele em cena na vida adulta.

Martin Eden, the character, is a sailor who wants to be a writer in Italy. Martin Eden, the film, is a meeting between Pietro Marcello, a filmmaker with one foot in the experimental and non-fiction scenes and Jack London, the famous adventure writer from the 20^th century early decades – writing here a semiautobiographical in which London and Eden histories have many things in common. It is a large bildusroman, but one might ask what is being formed. It is a sentimental education that is part bourgeois, part Marxist. It is in the particularities of this meeting that Marcello’s attention to documentary detail and the dramatic arc of London’s epic are tensioned.

A Mostra de Cinema de São Paulo este ano vai transcorrer este ano em edição online do dia 22/10 a 4/11. Uma seleção menor que a habitual com cerca de 200 títulos e talvez menos grandes detaques do que outros anos, mas para quem quer se arriscar muita coisa menos badalada interessante. Segue abaixo minha lista de recomendados nos moldes dos últimos anos são 3 blocos de 10 títulos de mais ao menos prioritários e um último com outros filmes de interesse.  Para além desses filmes, vale destacar também a retrospectiva cm os três títulos mais famosos do Fernando Coni Campos, cineasta que merecia ser bem mais visto e discutido. É uma pena que a parte histórica da Mostra se resuma este ano a esta retrospectiva, mas vale muito a pena.

I was watching a couple of lesser known 90s Japanese classics this morning, Shniji Somai’s The Friends (1994) and Gakuryû “Sogo” Ishii’s Labyrinth of Dreams (1997) it got me to think about film history myths and the way canon building can help in the west.  A major false myth: the downfall of Japanese cinema around 1980. It more or less proposes the lack of new blood on Japanese cinema from this period until more or less large arrival of Takeshi Kitano in the mid-90s (with the talented and mostly very accessible Juzo Itami as the only name to break out all in the middle term) besides some smaller cult corners (anime, horror) that would blow up in the late 90s.  It also goes along with the near death of interest in most late work from veteran Japanese masters that were not named Akira Kurosawa, Shohei Imamura or Nagisa Oshima. How many cinephiles are aware Kaneto Shindo’s last movie is from 2010?  That Masahiro Shinoda was working as long as 2003 or Ichikawa by 2007?
